PINOT NOIR: Originally from the Burgundy region of France, where it has been growing for over 2000 years, this temperamental grape is now flourishing in the cooler regions of California (Carneros) and the Northwest (Willamette Valley). The product from the Pinot grape is a soft wine with finesse. The nose is often floral with some earth, and the taste characteristics are light and fruity, with cherries, plums, raspberries and strawberries. The aftertaste may include some smokiness of herbs.
To “Pinot (Burgundy) Freaks”, each of the three major areas produces distinctively different wines, due to what is called gout de terroir (taste of the soil), and many will argue passionately which is the best. It’s like discussing politics, so don’t get involved…just enjoy the Pinot (Burgundy) that your friend will buy to prove his point.
