The name is taken from a long-ago competition in Ireland between two clans arguing over vaunted land. It was determined that whomever's team could touch the lakeshore first in a rowing contest would rule the land. A loyal crewmember of the losing team drew his sword, cut off his own hand and threw it to shore, thereby winning the title. The land is still remains in the family. Now that's dedication.
